The leading treatment for spider veins is surface sclerotherapy. A very fine needle is used to inject sclerosant liquid directly into the veins causing the vein to collapse and be reabsorbed into the body. Each sclerotherapy session typically results in elimination of 50 to 80 percent of the injected veins.
This procedure is often done on an outpatient basis in less than an hour depending on the number of veins treated, the size and location. The number of treatments needed vary depending on the severity of the spider veins. Patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately. Spider veins usually respond in three to six weeks. The treated veins will not reappear.
