Spider Veins
What are spider veins?
Also known as telangiectasia, spider veins occur when tiny red capillaries dilate close to the surface of the skin. Spider veins are a milder type of varicose veins and appear as thin, red lines or as weblike networks. Spider veins can develop anywhere on the body but more commonly appear on the legs and feet.
What causes spider veins?
Spider veins are caused by similar factors that cause varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. These include:
- Genetics
- Pregnancy
- Hormone changes, including taking birth control pills and other medicines containing estrogen and progesterone
- Injury
- Prolonged standing or sitting
- Exposure to the sun
How can spider veins be treated?
Sclerotherapy is the preferred treatment for spider veins on the legs. Procedures are completed with no anesthesia and allow patients to quickly return to normal activities.
Treatments done for spider veins are typically for cosmetic purposes. If you are self-conscious about your spider veins, or if they become painful or tender, contact a surgeon at Vein Care Specialists about treatment options.
